Book design & around it

DAVID LORENTE ZARAGOZA

I’m a graphic designer from Barcelona. After reading Architecture at the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Barcelona (ETSAB) for four years, in 1992 I graduated in Graphic Design at Elisava, Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, and went on to obtain a BA (Hons) degree in Graphic Arts from the Winchester School of Arts, University of Southampton. Between 1995 and 2012 I was a member of the design team at Actar publishers in Barcelona, specialised in architecture. Thanks to the experience I had acquired editing and publishing books, in 2012 I co-founded Spread with Tomoko Sakamoto. I have also taught at EINA University School of Design and Art in Barcelona (2001-2007), and since 2004 I’m a lecture on Editorial Design at Elisava.

TOMOKO SAKAMOTO

I’m an editor and designer born in Tokyo. I read Architecture at the University of Waseda, where I obtained my master’s degree. Having completed my studies, a scholarship awarded by the Japanese government enabled me to move to Barcelona in 1999 and work as an intern at the Enric Miralles Benedetta Tagliabue Arquitectes Associats (EMBT) architectural office. I subsequently joined the team at Actar publishers in Barcelona as an editor of books on architecture and design, where I remained from 2000 to 2012. Thanks to my experience in the fields of publishing and editing, in 2012 I teamed up with David Lorente to create Spread workspace. I continue to work in the field of book design and contribute to architectural journals. I also organise architecture related workshops, collaborate with universities, submit projects to competitions, etc., often in close association with professionals such as designer Luki Huber (and his Manual Thinking workshops) and photographer Hisao Suzuki.
