Elisava des de 1961

A history of the school

Catalogue / Elisava / 2014 / Daniel Cid (ed.) / Catalan, Spanish and English editions / Hardback / 205 x 310 mm / 320 pages / Colour / ISBN: 978-84-617-0936-5 (english) / This volume, large in size and classical in style, describes the narrated and illustrated history of Barcelona’s emblematic design school from 1961 to the present. However, the linear structure of text and narrative is interrupted by colour-page spreads  – full-bleed photographs printed on coated paper –that, rhythmically alternated, create visual pauses that can be read independently. The sequence of interspersed spreads offers two parallel readings of one and the same story. / Designed in collaboration with Claudia Parra.

Elisava 50

50th Anniversary

Catalogue / Elisava / 2012 / Daniel Cid (ed.) / Trilingual edition Catalan-Spanish-English / Hardback with fabric in spine / 210 x 320 mm / 144 pages / Colour / ISBN: ND / Fifty items correspond to fifty concepts that define the Elisava School of Design and Engineering. The design of the fifty miscellaneous fragments is totally flexible and heterogeneous. The cover acts at once as a table of contents and as a foundational statement.

Phantom. Mies as Rendered Society

Andrés Jaque

Monography / Andrés Jaque / Fundació Mies van der Rohe / 2014 / English edition / Sewn binding / 195 x 280 mm / 40 pages / Colour / ISBN: 978-84-936901-5-1 / This catalogue accompanied the installation created by architect Andrés Jaque at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. The covers of a limited edition of the publication include a fragment of the former red curtains of the pavilion. Besides the complex insertion of this element in the design, the inner layout suggests a double or  parallel reading of an historical-critical analysis of a descriptive text of the works on display.

In the format of a small bible, structured in chapters and divided in a thousand and one verses, the end object is striking for its outer appearance, in particular for the texture of its dust jacket. / Designed in collaboration with Claudia Parra.

Mies Award ’17

European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award

Catalogue / Fundació Mies van der Rohe / 2017 / Ivan Blasi, Anna Sala (eds.) / English edition / Box containing two paperback-with-flaps volumes / 170 x 240 mm / ISBN: 978-84-941836-6-9 / Two volumes: The Compilation / 384 pages / BN; The Jury Selection / 176 pages / Colour / The structure of this extensive edition is arranged in two very physically different volumes. One of them, lightweight (offset paper) yet longer, is a compilation of the graphic material in the form of a sketchbook; the other, short yet heavy (coated paper) stands out for the photographs of the nominated and prize-winning works and is an elegant and sophisticated brochure. All 355 projects unfold in the pages of the first book, starting from extremely precise plans that are geographically scaled and oriented, shaping, as a whole, a visual map of European architecture. / Designed in collaboration with Claudia Parra.

(Excerpt from the back cover.) The ‘Chinese volume’ is an object apparently devoid of content – a box, without its corresponding catalogue – intended to challenge that Asian country’s latent censorship. Through a conveniently readable QR code, the contents of the exhibition can be digitally downloaded. The ‘Japanese volume’ is structured in fragments, packets of texts, essays, graphs and images. In terms of design, the graphics of each different block start from a coded colour to create contrasts between densities and rhythmical readings.

UA series

Denise Scott Brown Collection

Essay series / Universitat d’Alacant / 2019 / Enrique Nieto (ed.) / Spanish edition / Paperback / 115 x 200 mm / Colour / “a”: Arquitectura in-dependiente / José Maria Torres Nadal / 264 pages / ISBN: 978-84-9717-667-5; “b”: Algunos objetos de deseo / José Pérez de Lama, Remedios Zafra, Iván López Munuera, Ernesto Castro / / 120 pages / ISBN: 978-84-9717-666-8 / The Denise Scott Brown Collection is conceived as a compilation of heterogeneous academic essays. Chiefly designed as reading books, visually austere and typographically rigorous, the layout of their inner pages is enhanced by blank spaces to encourage footnotes. The poster-cum-dust jacket is at once a fragment that acts as a visual enticement and a separate souvenir.

Mies Missing Materiality

Anna & Eugeni Bach

Monography / Anna & Eugeni Bach / Fundació Mies van der Rohe / 2019 / Ivan Blasi (ed.) / English edition / Swiss binding / 195 x 280 mm / 96 pages / Colour / ISBN: 978-84-948820-0-5 / This book is intended to evoke a fragment of the actual Mies Van der Rohe Pavilion in which the architects worked. The object exudes absence, whiteness and a vinyl texture, elements that are present in the spatial intervention, with a subtle irregularity that can also be discovered in the layout of the inner pages. The volume is illustrated with photographs by Adrià Goula.
